Honest Comparison

Loera vs. independent
vs. DIY.

Three real options for any DFW landscape project. We're biased about which is best, but the comparison below is honest about where each one wins and where each one fails.

Option 1

Loera

Full-service crew

Option 2

Independent

Solo or small crew

Option 3

DIY

Yourself + weekend time

Insured (general liability + workers' comp)

Carry both. Certificates on request.

Some carry. Many don't. Ask BEFORE the truck rolls.

Your homeowner's policy may not cover a back injury or property damage.

Fixed-price written quote

Quote within 48 hrs of on-site visit. No surprise charges.

Often verbal. "Day rate" pricing is common.

You eat overruns. Material returns and tool rentals add up.

Founder walks every job

Omar Loera personally walks every on-site estimate. Direct accountability.

Might be the operator, might be a junior estimator.

It's you.

Equipment and material access

Wholesale sod from local growers. Pro-grade pavers, base material.

Big-box materials are common. Marked up to you with retail margin.

Big-box only. No wholesale access. Renting heavy equipment for a weekend is expensive.

Speed (one-day install on standard jobs)

Most residential sod installs finish by sundown. Hardscape varies by scope.

Solo or 2-person crews stretch jobs across multiple days/weekends.

A weekend yard project usually becomes 3 weekends.

Permit handling

Pull permits where required for hardscape and structural work.

Often skipped, then it's your problem when the inspector visits.

Your responsibility entirely. Violation fines accumulate fast.

Cost (apples-to-apples residential sod ~3,000 sq ft)

$4,500 – $6,500 fully installed, hauled, and graded.

$2,800 – $4,500. Often missing one of: prep, haul, or insurance.

$1,500 – $2,800 in materials. Add 25-40 hours of your time and the cost of broken equipment.

Accountability if something goes wrong

One phone number. Office hours. Cockpit-tracked communication.

Sometimes a cell number. Sometimes they stop answering.

You and the mirror.

Right call for...

Anyone treating their yard as an investment. People who value time and accountability.

Simple, low-stakes jobs where you know the guy and can verify insurance.

Small jobs you can finish in a day. Tasks where the failure cost is low.

No / risk

When Loera is right

Projects you want done right the first time, by an insured crew, with one phone number to call. Most homeowners spending $1,500+ on a single job are in this bucket.

When independent is right

You personally know the operator. They\'ve done work for friends. They carry real insurance. The job is low-stakes enough that a missed week or a re-do isn't painful. Verify the four things in the FAQ below.

When DIY is right

Small jobs you can finish in a single weekend. Tasks where mistakes are reversible. You genuinely enjoy yard work. The labor savings cover the tool/material premium. Mulch refresh, mowing, hand-weeding, planting annuals.

Comparison FAQ

Common Questions.

Are you the cheapest option in DFW?

+
No. We're competitive on like-for-like scope, but we price for full insurance, in-house W2 crews, wholesale materials, and fixed-price quotes. If price is the only factor, an uninsured independent is going to come in lower. We lose those bids on purpose.

When does DIY actually make sense?

+
Small jobs where the failure cost is low: a 200 sq ft mulch refresh, planting annual flowers in an existing bed, mowing a 4,000 sq ft front yard if you genuinely enjoy it. Anything irreversible (sod, turf, hardscape, irrigation re-design, tree removal) is where DIY mistakes cost more than hiring would have.

How do I check if an independent landscaper is legit?

+
Ask for: (1) certificate of liability insurance (call the broker to confirm it's active), (2) certificate of workers' comp (Texas doesn't require it but quality crews carry it), (3) three references from jobs over 12 months old, (4) a written quote with scope and exclusions. Anyone who pushes back on those four asks is the wrong choice.

What's the biggest hidden cost with cheap landscaping?

+
Re-work. A bad sod install dies in summer and you're paying for replacement plus the original. A bad hardscape settles, cracks, or drains poorly within 18 months. Cheap holiday lighting that takes out a circuit costs you an electrician visit. The repeat-purchase math kills the apparent savings.

Do you take small jobs?

+
Yes. We do small as long as it's a fit. A $400 sod patch in Carrollton, a 120 sq ft paver landing, single-tree wrap holiday lighting — all real recent jobs. We won't low-ball ourselves to do them, but small ≠ no.
